5 things I had to learn QUICKLY when I started my business





Starting a biz isn't for the faint of heart and the learning curves come quickly.


There's a few things I had to get 100% clear on before I st


arted seeing any real traction in my biz:


1. My WHY: I thought I had a why – which was freedom, more money, quit my 9-5, follow my dream… but actually it was much deeper then that. And it involved serving others – your WHY will always be about more then you. Serving is at the heart. It’s the thing that keeps me going when the inevitable valleys hit. Biz Owners who don’t have a clear WHY (that’s emotionally driven) will find themselves quitting in that first year or


making short term gains in sacrifice of long term business growth.


2. My USP: While I knew I was awesome, I had to really look at my skills, my background, my gifts and determine: what REALLY made me unique? This was not done in isolation. The thing I thought I was good at – was actually not the thing people kept coming to me for. I started off doing career / transition coaching, that’s what I thought I wanted to do – then I realised my PR / writing gifts were unique in this space. I stopped ignoring them and starting making them my main business focus (thank goodness for a great coach and mastermind partner who revealed this part to me).




3. My Message: Who was I? What did I stand for? What did I NOT want to be in this industry? What did I want people to know? This question is an evolving one, but essential to start with – if you don’t have clarity on this, it will make marketing, writing content and connecting with clients SO much more difficult. Your main message should be your platform – your story that people will repeat when they talk about you behind your back. If you don’t have a ‘biz story’ your message won’t resonate. People buy your story, not your services.


4. My elevator pitch: The number one thing I see so many entrepreneurs struggle with is this right here. Because you don’t want to be ‘put in a box’


– because you aren’t ‘just a business coach’ – but you offer also X,Y,Z. But if you can’t explain what you do in one sentence, people lose interest. If you can’t explain what you do to a 10 year old, you’ll likely not find yourself connecting with your ideal clients – or have someone pass your details over. Pick ONE thing. Describe what you do, who you do it for and the problem you solve.


5. My ideal client: Knowing who you are taking to is SO essential. If you are talking to everyone you are talking to no one. I have had a nu


mber of clients come to me and feedback that my sales page (read: story) resonated greatly with them. I know them because I was them. I write and connect with people who I know, innately. Pick your person and own that lane.


If you don’t have 100% clarity on these things – you’ll struggle to: Find clients consistently AND to be have the impact you desire. You can’t get featured in media if you don’t know who you are and what you stand for and you won’t be able to stand out in the sea of entrepreneurs if you sound like everyone else.
