Want to change an area of your life? Get around new people.

Updated: Aug 6, 2020

Who is speaking into your life?

So many times we get life advice from people who frankly have no business doing so. Here’s a tip, if you wouldn’t want to walk a mile in their shoes, don’t take advice from them. I have sought and continue to seek mentoring from people who mastered – or are mastering certain parts of their life that I would like to strengthen and master in my own.

Starting in my career, I didn’t go to my university friends for advice. I went to professionals who were 5-10 years ahead of me – and just spending 10 minutes with them was more valuable then me googling information or charting to my friends.

In proverbs 27, it says ‘iron sharpens iron’. You want a better marriage? Get around a woman who adores her husband and has been married longer then you.

You want to take the next step in your career? Seek out someone who is doing or has done exactly what you want for yourself.

One thing I have learned is to have different mentors for different areas – this just means connecting with people who are willing to offer some time.

If you find yourself thinking:

‘I really love how they communicate with their spouse, how they connect with their kids or how they show up at work’ – don’t just be curious, aim to connect with them. Ask for 10 minutes of their time, send them a specific direct message or email – be humble and do your homework.

If you don’t ask, you don’t get.

If you feel like you don’t have access to those type of people – pay to get in the room.

Go to networking events, conferences, wherever you need to be, to connect with like-minded individuals., even If its out of your comfort zone.
